Without waste gates the boost pressure, which is created by a turbocharger, will depend only on the pressure of the engine exhaust.

This happens because exhaust pressure varies with engine speed (measured in rpm). This means that with increasing engine speed, turbocharger will produce more boost pressure.

The problem is that the engine can handle only a definite amount of boost. Most mass-produced units can sustain only about 0.7 kg/cm2, if not less.

In order to adjust the value of pressurization of the engine, the bypass valve acts as a door, allowing only a certain amount of exhaust gases passing through the impeller of the turbine.

Once the engine begins to give more pressure of exhaust than bypass valve allows, opens a valve, which directs emerging from the engine exhaust gases to bypass the turbine blades.

There are two types of waste gates.

The first type -is the internal waste gates. Internal relief valve – is a component of the turbine. The valve is opened by means of actuator (drive), which has a diaphragm device.
In this case, the extra exhaust gases are vented straight into the exhaust system.

There is also a so-called external waste gate. In contrast to the internal valve, it is located separately from the turbine. Excess gases can be produced either in the exhaust system or directly into the atmosphere.

In systems where it is important to obtain maximum performance, it is used the second option.

Most mass-produced systems are equipped with an internal waste gate, because this option is best suited for systems with low-pressure turbo charging. However, many systems on the market show the best performance with a separate external waste gate that makes it an ideal choice for those turbo systems that creates pressure in the range from 1.4 kg/cm2 to 2.1 kg/cm2.

Screamer pipe – is a tube that is attached to the waste gate and comes into play only at the maximum level of boost pressure, not when you are resetting the gas. For example, such Screamer pipe is installed on the Ferrari F40, where it looks like the third exhaust pipe behind the car.

Screamers are extremely noisy and technically should be withdrawn in the exhaust system before the catalyst.
