What are the special needs of cats?

Feeding, exercise, play, and elimination are daily needs that must be met if you want a healthy, happy cat. Some purebred and mixed-breed cats have long and/or thick hair coats that require daily grooming to prevent matting and skin irritation. If you're not prepared to provide daily grooming, consider a short-haired variety that can take care of most of its own grooming needs. To reduce the risk of injury and disease, cats should always be kept indoors. A cat's litter box must be kept very clean so that the cat continues to use it. If there are multiple cats within the home, multiple litter boxes should be available in several locations.

Use caution when using products that contain organophosphates in your house or on your cat.

Cats are more sensitive to organophosphate insecticides than most other animals. Currently, there are few flea products in the United States labeled for use on cats that contain organophosphates as an active ingredient. The few that can be used on cats contain a small concentration of organophosphate. However, many household sprays and products that are specifically labeled "for use on dogs only" are widely available. Again, avoid these dog products!

In some cases, exposed cats can start showing signs within hours. Symptoms would include drooling, depression, labored breathing, weakness, and convulsions. Without prompt and proper treatment, many exposures could lead to the animal's death. With appropriate treatment by a veterinarian, the survival chances are much higher.

Choosing a cat food. What to look for.

What should be on the label:

Make sure compliance with AAFO's requirements for "Complete and Balanced". This should be able to be obtained by reading the label.

What is the named protein source. You should see "chicken", "lamb", or "beef". Avoid labels that just state "meat".

If you are purchasing canned food the protein source should be the listed first.

As always check the freshness date.

Talk to your vet. He/She can help provide information on a quality food and also can help you understand labels.

Try to avoid foods that list "By Products", "meat and or/bone meal", and "animal digest" on the label.

Try to avoid food that list excessive carbohydrate "fillers".

Should you choose canned or kibble

Most nutritionists believe cats should be given both dry and canned food.

Canned food, since it contains water, helps to ensure your cat is getting enough water in his/her system.

Kibble is nice as it can be left out to allow your cat to feed when he/she is hungry.

Nutro Products Announces Voluntary Recall of Limited Range of Dry Cat Food Products

Nutro Products announced a voluntary recall of select varieties of NUTRO® NATURAL CHOICE® COMPLETE CARE® Dry Cat Foods and NUTRO® MAX® Cat Dry Foods with "Best If Used By Dates" between May 12, 2010 and August 22, 2010. The cat food is being voluntarily recalled in the United States and ten additional countries. This recall is due to incorrect levels of zinc and potassium in our finished product resulting from a production error by a US-based premix supplier.

Consumers who have purchased affected product should immediately discontinue feeding the product to their cats, and switch to another product with a balanced nutritional profile. While we have received no consumer complaints related to this issue, cat owners should monitor their cat for symptoms, including a reduction in appetite or refusal of food, weight loss, vomiting or diarrhea. If your cat is experiencing health issues or is pregnant, please contact your veterinarian.

Consumers who have purchased product affected by this voluntary recall should return it to their retailer for a full refund or exchange for another NUTRO® dry cat food product. Cat owners who have questions about the recall should call 1-800-833-5330 between the hours 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM CST, or visit www.nutroproducts.com.

American Kennel Club and Cat Fanciers' Association Debut 'Meet The Breeds' At New York City's Javits Center

The American Kennel Club® (AKC®), in conjunction with the Cat Fanciers' Association® (CFA®), is pleased to announce that "Meet the Breeds™" will take place on Saturday and Sunday, October 17th and 18th, 2009 at New York City's Javits Convention Center. Sponsored by PetPartners, Inc. a leading pet healthcare provider, Meet the Breeds is a showcase of over 160 AKC registered dog breeds and 41 CFA registered cat breeds and will be the first stand-alone event of its kind in the world.

AKC Meet the Breeds has been held at every AKC/Eukanuba National Championship show since its inception in 2001, drawing thousands of spectators to the colorful and creatively decorated booths showcasing each AKC registered breed. The booths, created by each breed's national club, are individually decorated to depict the breed's country of origin, historical purpose or function, and attributes as a family pet. Responsible breeders and their dogs, puppies, cats and kittens will interact with the public to educate them on various breeds and responsible pet ownership.

"Because of the overwhelming popularity of this feature at our past shows and the tremendous participation of our Parent Clubs, we have decided to create a stand-alone event geared 100% toward pet lovers. Bringing the internationally respected CFA in adds a new dimension and will allow event goers to experience every breed of dog and cat in the U.S. together under one roof," said Dennis Sprung, AKC President and CEO. "It's an ideal opportunity for any animal lover to enjoy the diversity and beauty in the canine and feline worlds and learn about breeds directly from the experts. We will offer attractions such as educational demonstrations, vendors and activities for kids and we expect it to become an annual family event."

"We are so pleased to be joining the AKC for this event," said Pam DelaBar, President of the CFA. "As many pet owners know, cats and dogs are part of the family. This showcase will allow people to explore more about pedigreed cats and consider what breed will fit in to their lives."

"As one of the leading providers of pet healthcare insurance, PetPartners is delighted to be the top sponsor of this exceptional event that will help families learn more about responsible pet ownership and how to ensure their pets live long and healthy lives," said Steve Popovich, CEO of PetPartners.

Demonstrations will include various activities such as dog and cat grooming, Agility (dogs and cats), AKC Canine Good Citizen® Testing, K-9 Search and Rescue and First Aid for dogs and cats.
